NEWS – Cardiff City FC win promotion to the Premier League
Cardiff’s arrival to the English Premier League marks the first time the team will play in the top flight for 51 years. The promotion to the Premier League comes after several seasons of near misses, with the closest being a 3-2 loss to Blackpool in the play-off finals at Wembley in 2010.
The promotion was secured with a goalless draw against Charlton Athletic on April 16 at the Cardiff City Stadium. While thousands of fans invaded the pitch at the final whistle, not everyone has been celebrating the promotion. The rebranding of the club by Malaysian investor Vincent Tan has seen a change to the club’s colours from blue to red and the relegation of the famous bluebird on Cardiff City’s badge in favour of a red dragon. Fans angry at the change have claimed that in winning promotion, the club’s soul was lost.
Nevertheless, supporters of Premier League teams can now look forward to away matches at a second Welsh city, as Cardiff join their local rivals, Swansea, in what is considered the best league in the world.
